Outreach
Outreach is essential for the Letitia Carson Legacy Project as it raises public awareness, fosters community involvement, and ensures that her pioneering story of resilience, justice, and Black history in Oregon is recognized, preserved, and shared widely.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Registration is open!
3rd Annual Letitia Carson Symposium
Friday, May 15, 5-8pm
Join us for an evening of storytelling and celebration about one of Oregon’s first Black pioneers.
In addition to short talks and conversation, we will honor special guests: the historians and storytellers who brought Letitia Carson’s story to light, and the educators whose students helped bring the Carson Donation Land Claim to life. A buffet dinner and non-alcoholic beverages will be served.
At 2pm, before the evening event, we will lead a tour of the Carson Donation Land Claim and homestead site, in the Soap Creek Valley, ~10 miles north of Corvallis. The tour involves about 2 miles of walking on a path of grass and mulched vegetation that is uneven in places. We will provide van transportation to the site from a nearby parking area. Registered participants will receive detailed instructions ahead of time.
This event is free of charge and advance registration is required.
Spring flora & fauna field day
Saturday, April 25
The Letitia Carson Legacy Project invites you to visit the land where Letitia and David Carson first settled in Oregon!
On Saturday, April 25, we will offer free guided tours of the Carson Donation Land Claim and Homestead site. Advanced registration is required.
We will offer three tours that day, starting at 9:30am, 12:30pm, and 3pm.
Each tour will cover approximately 2 miles in 2 hours. We will be walking on varying terrain, including mowed grass and dried plant debris from trail clearing, which may be uneven in spots. The route has minimal elevation change and no stairs.
You’ll learn about and help us track the plants and animals we encounter along the Memoir Path that meanders along Soap Creek and leads to the Carson Donation Land Claim and Homestead Site.
At this time of year, there is no on-site parking. We will provide van transportation from off-site parking about 2.5 miles from the site. Plan to arrive at least 20 minutes before your tour begins. We will bring you back to the parking area after the tour ends.
